10 Tips to Simplify Any Space

The Best Closet Organizer - You
with an Easy 3-Step Plan!

Are you looking for the best closet organizer to create a well organized space? It doesn't always take a new set of hardware to organize your closet ... it takes you with a plan and determination to get through the seasonal clothes change. YOU can be the BEST CLOSET ORGANIZER for your closet - if you go step by step from beginning to end. It can be done!

What's my Goal for Cleaning out My Closet?

The goal is to have a closet full of clothes you can wear and be able to find an outfit quickly! You may have a closet full, but do you wear them all? Let's be ruthless and giveaway the excess as you get your wardrobe back into shape.

Step 1: Organize and Simplify the Rod Hanging Items.

Hang all the like categories together, such as all the slacks, shirts, tops, dresses and skirts. Put them on matching hangars, hang them from long to short items, dark to light colors, and even space them one inch apart. You can do one section each morning until everything is back where it should be.

What do you do if it all doesn't all fit? Count the contents of each category and write the totals down on a clipboard, then consider cutting them by 10-20%. One lady said she had 75 blouses, another woman had 33, and another had 15! Who had "enough?" The one who had exactly enough  to meet her needs without any excess.

That's one of our closet problems, we have too many "closet orphans"  that don't go with anything in particular and deserve to find a better home. Give the unmatched clothes items away and focus on creating matching outfits that you like and love to wear.

A good rule of thumb: You need at least five complete outfits that you love for the new season ahead of you. Plan them out and even take pictures to post on the closet door for quicker dressing. Organize it from head to toe on a hanger, or bed, and snap a picture. It's simple to get dressed now!

Step 2: Vacuum the Floor and Organize Your Shoes

Next pull out everything from your closet floor and vacuum it thoroughly. It's amazing what dust and missing items are hiding out of sight. Then line up your shoes from dressy to casual, and dark to light. Since we only wear the same 20% of our shoes over and over, what should you keep and what can you give away?

One audience participant heard me talk about the importance of sorting your shoes and gave away all her pairs of shoes that hurt -- 22 pair of shoes!!! She now had a clean closet she loved.

When my special 85 year old Aunt passed away, she had three pair of shoes in her organized closet - one white, one tan, and one black. And she always looked well dressed. I learned you really don't need as many shoes as you think you do. Polish and clean your favorites while passing along the extras before they're out of style.

Step 3: Refold, Box, and Label Everything on Your Shelves

My two favorite things to do on shelves is to refold all the sweaters and label the stored shoes with my P-Touch Label Maker. That makes any morning start orderly when the unused items have the "Decorative Edge" facing forward in your favorite sweater colors, and the matching storage boxes have neat, printed content labels on them.

I like to organize purses from dark to light, too, and then create a "display" of a favorite hats, purses, or "funky" favorite items that makes the client smile when they open their closet. You are in for a treat once you get your shelves looking attractive.

YOU are the BEST Closet Organizer

All it takes is one nice day and you realize a seasonal change has come. That's also the day when you wake up and realize your closet cleaning is overdue. It's time to begin some closet cleaning by starting inside your darkened closet and cleaning it up for the new season.

And if you still are stuck, invite a girlfriend, spouse, or daughter over whose taste is better than yours to help you. Before they come, get your clothes washed, dry cleaned, and put away.

Uncluttering Tip: Ask yourself "Do I like this? Do I use it now?" If not, let it go!

One client told me she "lost 100 pounds - all by going through her closets!" So you can lose weight and feel great knowing someone else will use it!
